Football 4 Charity is a not-for-profit organisation raising money for Tommy's, the baby charity, which funds research into premature birth, miscarriage & stillbirth. It is an entirely voluntary organization with no paid staff, so you can be sure all money goes directly to those who need it most.

HOPEHIV

HOPEHIV - AIDs related causes in Africa

Football 4 Charity has been fundraising for HOPEHIV since the summer of 2001. Here is some more information about HOPEHIV & what they do...

Who are HOPEHIV?

HOPEHIV helps orphans and vulnerable children in sub-Saharan Africa to fulfil their potential and ambitions. Born into families and countries ravaged by AIDS they are lucky of they get any kind of childhood at all. A whole generation of parents has been stripped away, forcing youngsters into being adults before their time. Extended families can barely cope. Many children struggle on their own to care for younger brothers and sisters – cooking, cleaning and worrying about them. Others flee to live on the streets, at risk of abuse, prostitution and drugs.

HOPEHIV works in 200 communities across 12 countries in the poorest parts of Africa, funding innovative projects that deliver real and practical benefits for as many children orphaned by AIDS as possible. We support a wide variety of work, from help for children in a civil war refugee camp in Northern Uganda to funding for a school in the slums of Nairobi.

HOPEHIV is giving these young people the chance to build happy, healthy and independent lives. AIDS has not defeated Africa. It may have created 13 million orphans and left parents in their graves, but Africa’s spirit lives on. The children are Africa’s future and its hope.

How we help?

HOPEHIV goes to the root problem and tackle things from there. Our projects need to be flexible and responsive. We always put the child first.

  • If a child hasn’t got food or is grief-stricken over losing a parent, he or she isn’t going to do well in lessons. We try and spot orphans in real trouble and provide emergency support – then help them stay in school.
  • Adventure camps and kids’ clubs help us reach out to isolated and vulnerable orphans. It is often where the healing process begins and life opens up again.
  • Earning a living is crucial, especially for teenagers in child-headed households looking after siblings at home. HOPEHIV funds training in everything from jewellery-making and hairdressing to carpentry and community agriculture projects.
  • Civil war refugees face enormous challenges. HOPEHIV funds medical units and schools in refugee camps in Northern Uganda.
  • Life on the streets with a group of friends can feel good after losing your mum and dad. Streetworkers funded by HOPEHIV need to win trust to help street kids avoid the risks of glue-sniffing, violence and prostitution.

How to help?

HOPEHIV believes its strength lies in pioneering initiatives, which can be picked up by future funders and rolled out to benefit huge numbers of orphans affected by AIDS. UNICEF’s backing for HOPEHIV-funded adventure camps underlines the success of this approach. Identifying new leaders in Africa is paramount – HOPEHIV supports young people in developing leadership skills.

There are no ‘quick fixes’ when it comes to tackling the devastation caused by AIDS. The good news is that your money goes a long way in Africa.

  • £10 gets one month’s meals for an extended orphan family or school fees for a month.
  • £40 gives training and support for one foster parent
  • £60 allows one orphan to go on a 5 day adventure camp offering adventure activites and counselling
  • £80 is on month’s salary for a teacher in Uganda
  • £180 gives vocational training for an older orphan

HOPEHIV would like to reach many more children and with your help we can.
